From the 10/01/2009 edition of the Sun-Times...

Understanding the importance of fire safety and burn prevention is a message everyone, young and old, should observe.

Each Thursday throughout the month of October, this page will focus on fire safety and burn prevention information sponsored by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance. Thousands of students throughout Illinois will learn more about the dangers, the consequences, the causes and how to prevent a fire from occurring.

Fire deaths and injuries can be prevented if we learn more about fire safety and burn prevention - and practice it.

Did you know?

  • Fire is fast! There is little time. In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire.
  • Fire is hot! Heat is more threatening than flames. A fire’s heat alone can kill. Room temperature in a fire can be 100 degrees at the floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level.
  • Fire is dark! Fire isn’t bright, it’s pitch black. Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness.
  • Fire is deadly! Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire uses up the oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill.
